Certified interpreting is a verbal and official translation performed by a certified translator-interpreter, hence the direct link with certified translation, except that the latter is written. Certified interpreting is usually necessary for different public and official procedures, in which one or several parties do not speak the official language. In Spain, a certified interpreter is a professional licensed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, which attests that the content of their interventions faithfully and completely reflects the original speech. Under no circumstances, must he change, add or remove data or elements that do not belong to the original speech or offer a version of the speech that puts forward his own personal views. For instance, certified interpreting is necessary in courts, tribunals and notaries. Furthermore, regarding civil registration the presence of a certified interpreter is required when initiating and processing marriage files before the judge or officials or during the wedding ceremony, when either the bride or groom, or both, do not have Spanish as their first language. In practise, certified interpreting operates as liaison interpreting or in some cases, as consecutive interpreting.
